Dutch hospital to introduce black box recorder in operating theatres
A hospital
in the southern Dutch city of Breda
plans to introduce an aircraft-style black box into its operating theatres.
Everything a surgeon says and does would be registered, as would the vital
signs of the patient. The purpose of the recorder is to provide material for
analysis should anything go wrong during surgery. The Dutch Health Inspectorate
has welcomed the idea. It agrees that a black box recorder would be a useful
aid to improve team performance but warns that it should be used solely for
this purpose and not in any subsequent litigation. Analysis of procedures that
go wrong will hopefully lead to a reduction in the number of unnecessary deaths
and accidents. Other Dutch hospitals have also shown interest in the system.
