Dutch constructor takes pride in Africa's largest football stadium
The Dutch
engineering firm Interbeton has redesigned Africa's
largest football stadium, Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg in preparation for the 2010
World Cup football tournament this summer. Interbeton
is a subsidiary of Dutch Royal BAM Group and it was a key partner in a
consortium that renovated and expanded the stadium. Soccer
City is a historic building therefore
the city of Johannesburg
chose to upgrade the facility instead of replacing it with a new one. Dutch
engineer Stan Aarts was the technical manager for the
project and he supervised the construction of the stadium's new design for
three years. It included a new façade around the stadium built in the shape of
a calabash, an African pot. The building can accommodate some 94,000 fans.
"We cannot wait for the games to begin so that we can showcase our
expertise to the rest of the world," Aarts said.
