Dutch modular housing system is innovative solution to shelter problems
An
innovative Dutch company, Tempohousing, makes
prefabricated buildings which may be the ultimate solution for people who are
displaced from their homes, such as in Haiti. The Rapid Shelter system is
a low-cost modular housing concept based on the standard 40-foot shipping
container. The solid units are storm and earthquake proof. They are also easy
to transport and relocate as standard freight on any vessel, truck or train.
With only basic tools and a crane, the shelters can be created within a matter
of days. They can also be stacked. An interior package, including beds,
blankets and more, is available to make the dwellings ready to use immediately.
Tempohousing developed the Rapid Shelter system in 2005 in answer to a housing
shortage for students in Amsterdam.
It has since been used for housing projects and hotels worldwide. Tempohousing is currently investigating the possibilities
for providing Rapid Shelter solutions in Haiti.
